Design

The Brief

Wiltshire County Council required new purpose-built accommodation for their Technical Services Department, consolidating office and warehouse functions in a single facility. The brief demanded maximum spatial efficiency within a tight public sector budget, whilst creating a workplace environment that supports staff wellbeing and operational effectiveness.

The site presented few planning constraints, offering the opportunity to create a contemporary building that stands as an exemplar of modern public sector architecture. The client sought a practical solution that would provide flexibility for future organisational change and the potential for straightforward expansion as departmental requirements evolved.

Design Concept

The architectural approach focused on maximising functionality whilst maintaining visual quality and creating a satisfying work environment. The design eschews unnecessary elaboration in favour of honest expression of purpose, resulting in a workplace that is efficient, robust, and adaptable.

The structural concept expresses clarity and economy. Exposed steel columns support the roof structure, transforming essential structural elements into architectural features that articulate the building’s internal logic. This approach eliminates redundant finishes whilst creating visual interest through the honest expression of construction.

Material Selection

The material palette reinforces the building’s contemporary character whilst ensuring durability and low maintenance. Metal wall cladding and roofing provide weather-resistant, cost-effective envelopes that will perform reliably over the building’s lifespan. Glazed elements introduce daylight and visual transparency, breaking down barriers between office areas and promoting collaborative working patterns.

The exposed steel column structure creates a distinctive aesthetic whilst demonstrating structural efficiency. This integration of structure and architecture eliminates unnecessary layers of construction, reducing both initial costs and long-term maintenance requirements.

Spatial Planning

Internal layouts prioritise flexibility and adaptability. Open-plan office areas can be reconfigured to accommodate changing team structures and working practices without requiring major alterations.
