Wing Barn, a barn conversion in Leigh on Mendip, Somerset
A traditional Somerset stone barn, with flanking side wing lean-tos, converted into residential accommodation. The integrity of the original barn winged section was kept and used as an interesting shape to create a modern contemporary dwelling with glazed corners. Bedrooms were created through the introduction of a first floor without the need to increase the height of the existing roof. Reusing the existing stone and roof tiles both saved costs and seen as in keeping with the local vernacular. Contemporary aluminium windows, doors and roofing are part of the agricultural tradition of metal windows and tin roofs. Wall, roof and floor insulation provides a warm modern home with hot water heating enhanced by PV roof panels.
