A contemporary extension to a modernist 1970′s architect designed house tucked away in a village setting.

The new glass extension ‘wings’ provide an exciting new entrance and kitchen with spectacular views of the extensive gardens. More importantly it had to work with the existing modernist design of the house, whilst adding a dynamic contemporary edge to the original design. The new entrance hall provides a great focal point on arrival which stands out and directs visitors to the front door. The new open plan kitchen acts as the hub of the house that now easily links to the gardens.

Planning permission and Building Control Approval where granted from Mendip District Council and the extension was built and completed in 2010.

The house and gardens are open to the public can be viewed under the annual for charity National Garden Scheme.

Client: Private

Project: Summerhouse

Year: 2009

A new summerhouse in the garden for both living and working.

With good insulation and underfloor heating and a shower room the office can also be used as self contained guest room for the main house.

The site is positioned on a prominent hillside location and surrounded by a variety of traditional architecture. Whilst a contemporary design the summerhouse will blend in time with the garden and surroundings through the use of natural and sustainable materials such as timber cladding and a sedum grass roof.

Selected for the 2011 RIBA Forty Best Small Projects, launched by the RIBA Bristol and Bath Branch and is now travelling around the South West region, starting at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon and then moving onto Salisbury and Bristol for the RIBA Awards for the South West.

Location: Lansdown, Bath

Client: Private

Project: Residential Extension

Year: 2008

An existing extension was replaced and incorporated into the remodelling of the existing small and separate kitchen and dining room. The large chimney and separating wall was removed to create one large open plan family kitchen and dining space as the hub of the house – with a new wine cellar.

Conservation rooflights, timber windows and patio doors provide extra natural light and open up the Edwardian house into the garden. A small and dark kitchen has been transformed into a large contemporary space that meets the needs of a modern family and satisfies the strict requirements of a Conservation Area in Bath. Required a good working relationship with BANES Council. Featured in a number of kitchen design magazines. Kitchen fittings supplied and fitted by the Bath Kitchen Company.

Title: Hornblotton

Location: Rural Somerset

Client: Private

Project Type / Sector: Residential, Renovation, Farmhouse

Year: 2006

A major renovation of an existing farmhouse in rural Somerset. It has been completely stripped back to its original stone walls, some of which have been rebuilt.

A new roof, windows and doors have been added, with a new contrasting contemporary stairwell at the rear to complete the design.

The house now has five bedrooms, a traditional farmhouse kitchen, large utility room, living and dining rooms and a large office. A sensitive design approach for a delicate historic building.

Completed on site Summer 2007.
