The clients purchased the property in 2009 together with the adjoining successful ‘Greenacres Campsite’ that is listed in the Cool Camping Guide. The clients have a large family and so five extra bedrooms were designed into the first floor extensions. All sleeping accommodation is now on the first floor and all living and working areas are on the ground floor. The construction took place on a fast track programme and was completed on time.

Project Type / Sector: Summerhouse

Year: 2009

The existing garden shed was not suitable as a habitable room so a more permanent structure was designed as a garden room that could be used for both living and working.

The building is extremely well insulated and has underfloor heating. In addition to the main office space, there is also a shower room with shower, WC and sink.

The garden site is positioned on a prominent hillside location and surrounded by a variety of traditional architecture.

Whilst the summerhouse was designed to act as a subtle contemporary contrast in time it will blend into the hillside through the use of natural and sustainable materials such as timber cladding and a sedum grass roof. Completed on site September 2009.

A huge three storey high open plan space gave a blank canvas for the interior design.

The trick was to get the balance right to accommodate family life whilst retaining the drama and features of the space.

The juxtaposition of open and closed space gives an exciting design to live, mixing traditional with contemporary, in a sensitive yet dynamic manner.

Recently completed and an icon for our design ideas.

A contemporary extension to a modernist 1970’s architect designed house tucked away in a village setting.

The new glass extension ‘wings’ will provide an exciting new entrance and kitchen with spectacular views of the large gardens, that are open to the public under the annual National Garden Scheme. Most importantly it must work with the existing modernist design of the house, whilst adding a dynamic contemporary edge to the original design.

Planning permission and Building Control Approval have now been granted successfully from Mendip District Council.

Work is progressing onsite and is due for completion by early 2010.
