A new traditional stone, render and timber cottage designed and built as a modern sustainable home. The site is fantastic – adjacent to the Longleat Estate it has great views over an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. An ancient oak tree acts as its namesake and focal point of the design and is seen through big picture windows and folding doors. Planning Permission for a new house in open countryside was a challenge but successful. A Code 3 Sustainable Home was designed and built and selected as an exemplar eco house for ecobuild. Working with good local builders the house was recently completed to a high quality.

Project: Residential Extension

Year: 2009

A contemporary extension to a 1970′s house tucked away in a village setting. The new glass extension ‘wings’ provide an exciting new entrance and kitchen with spectacular views of the extensive gardens. More importantly it works well with the existing architect designed modernist house, whilst adding a dynamic contemporary edge to the original design. The new entrance hall provides a great focal point on arrival which stands out and directs visitors to the front door. The new open plan kitchen acts as the hub of the house that now easily links to the gardens.

The house and gardens are open to the public can be viewed under the annual for charity National Garden Scheme.

The scheme originated from our FREE consultation through the Architect in the House scheme.

Year: 2012

Detailed Planning Permission was granted in 2010 for a new three storey, 5 bedroom timber frame sustainable home. The site is in a great location situated on the edge of a village in the Mendips, with picturesque views of the open countryside. Local clay roof tiles, natural stone walling and larch timber cladding from the nearby Stourhead estate were used. Recycled newspaper was also used for the thermal insulation and, together with other energy efficiency devices, a Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 has been achieved in the SAP calculations. In addition, the aim is to complete a Passive House through high air tightness standards. Completed in 2013 for £170,000 apx.

The conversion of a chapel into an Architect’s dream home – a life long ambition recently completed.

A huge three storey high open plan space gave us a blank canvas for the interior design. The challenge was to get the right balance to accommodate noisy family life whilst retaining the drama and features of the chapel which could be used as an office. The juxtaposition of open and closed space also gave us an exciting basis to mix traditional with contemporary design, in a sensitive yet dynamic manner.

Winner of a Green Apple Award for preserving our architectural heritage and making a positive contribution to the built environment. Selected as an exemplar project by the RIBA Sector Reviews.

Year: 2012

This is a restricted and awkward plot in Frome. Unfortunately the previous architects had failed to gain planning permission from Mendip District Council. We addressed the planning concerns of overlooking by partially sinking the building down into the ground so it appears single storey from the front and two storey from the rear - affectively an underground house opening onto a courtyard garden. The sustainable house is well insulated and constructed from a combination of a lightweight timber frame and the high thermal mass of masonry. Renewable energy is provided by PV panels. The design of the modern one off town house provides a contemporary and attractive contrast to the unimpressive and dated styles in the street scene. Featured at ecobuild and shown at the Bath and South West Homebuilding and Renovating Show.
