Under the new National Planning Policy for General Permitted Development Order [GPDO] we have now successfully gained permission to convert several existing agricultural barns into dwellings. Under the legalisation up to 465 sqm of an existing agricultural building can be converted into 1 to 5 separate dwellings without the need for planning permission. The regulations are complex and are being interpreted in different ways by each planning authority and permission is proving difficult to obtain. However we have learnt to overcome these restrictions and are using this legalisation as a means of creating contemporary new houses in countryside locations. As an aside, this is great opportunity to increase the value of the site and land for farmers to sell on.
